Personally, I agree they can be pretty- VERY sparkly when cut well!- but I'm partial to sapphires. :)

One of my favorite articles: very nuanced, very informative.
That said, diamonds have really grown on me in the last few years, at least once I found the warm ones: colorless have been a bit devalued for me by all the CZs out there, but the weird creamy glow of an M? DEE-lightful.
My favorite stone is turquoise, but I dislike southwestern jewelry, so it can be a bit tricky to find. :)
I've also had trouble finding jet jewelry (I'd like a piece for sentimental reasons) that I like.
Diamonds are nice, but, yeah. I prefer blue topaz, smoky quartz, labradorite, citrine, amber, moonstone, sunstone, garnet, jade...
Of the really precious stones, my favorite is probably sapphire.
